Foundations of Cryptic Masonry

**Foundations of Cryptic Masonry** introduces the history, structure, and symbolism of the Royal and Select Masters Degrees within the York Rite. The course examines the Royal Master, Select Master, and Super Excellent Master degrees, focusing on their place in completing the narrative between the Symbolic Lodge and the Royal Arch. Emphasis is placed on the allegory of the vault, preservation of sacred knowledge, and the moral themes of fidelity, secrecy, and trust. Students will review Council governance, officer roles, and ritual context. By the end, participants will understand the historical development, symbolic meaning, and organizational framework of Cryptic Masonry and its role in safeguarding Masonic truth.

The legend of the ineffable degree begins with a legend that forms the basis of the 3rd-degree ritual of the symbolic degrees and ends in triumph and disaster: the Temple (why capitalized) is finished, the sacred name of Deity is discovered, and the Perfect Elus are created. The Perfect Elu’s maintain the true faith in the face of much adversity and continue to transmit with scrupulous purity the knowledge of the true God. These degrees offer many opportunities to reflect on the nature of God and the innate limitations of human language to express the inexpressible.
